General Questions

What is a web ring?
A web ring is a wonderful way to bring together websites of a similar nature. In the case of The Fractal Artists' Ring, that theme is fractal art. One can move to the next site in the ring to see all the ring sites, eventually returning to where they started, skip around randomly, or view a list of sites and choose which ones they'd like to view.

Submission Questions

I don't have my own site. May I submit a site where my work is being shown?
Unless you manage the site, you should not submit the site to the Ring. In order for a site to be added to the Ring, changes must be made to the web page, and only the person who manages the web site can do that.

Why do I need a password?
Without a password, there would be no way to allow you to modify your own site's information while preventing everyone else from being able to modify it. Your password gives you access to the FAR management pages so you can change the title, URL, description, and other information about your site. The password you provide is only used for this purpose.

Can I change my site information or URL later? How?
Yes, you can. Just go to the Ring Member Log-in page, enter your site ID and password, and you can change all of your information.

Ring Guideline Questions

I have more than one fractal site. May I submit both?
It must be two different sites, with different artwork, on two different servers. Otherwise, no.

I have a commercial site. May I submit it?
If the page you want the Ring to link to is primarily about fractal art (even if it's about fractal software you're trying to market) then that's permitted-as long as the advertising isn't excessive, and it includes an actual gallery, and not just a few sample graphics. If you're just linking to a commercial page, then no, you may not submit it.

I have beautiful images, but my HTML skills are shaky. How can I make a nice web page?
If you can't get help from places like the HTML Writers Guild, try WebMonkey. An HTML generator, like Dreamweaver, is an invaluable tool for those wanting to create pages but are prevented by the fact that they do not know how to code. Of course, there is a learning curve for Dreamweaver, too. Many free sites, like Geocities and Tripod have their own templates for creating simple sites, but usually they are limited in the amount of graphics/images you can display.

Ring HTML Code Questions

When should I add the Ring code to my page?
As soon as you sign up and Ring Surf generates the code for you. After you fill out the form and submit your site, we will visit your page and make sure it's Ring material. If it is, and if your Ring code is working properly, you will receive e-mail telling you you've been accepted. Your site will then be formally inserted into the Ring. We cannot insert your site into the Ring until the code is in place and working.

May I change the banner if I don't like it?

We would rather you did not. If you absolutely insist on changing the banner, please send us a copy for approval first. If all you want to do is adjust the color and/or saturation, then that's permitted; you don't need special permission for that.

May I change the HTML code if I don't like it?
No. It's been carefully checked and should work in all situations. If there's a specific reason you want to change the Ring code, please ask us about it.

I put the code in my page, but it looks wrong in my browser. Why?
It probably didn't copy correctly. Look at the code page again, and compare it to the HTML code in your page. Look carefully, and try to find where they are different. If you're using a visual HTML editor, you may have trouble pasting the code directly. I suggest using a plain text editor (like Notepad in Windows or Edit Pad) to insert the code, but Dreamweaver (in Show Code View mode), works just fine, too. Don't forget to put in the site ID number, and the location of your ring graphic on your server, as the directions indicate. If you still can't see why it doesn't work, ask us and we'll take a look.

I put the code in my page, but it doesn't work when I click it. Why?
Your code will not work 100% properly until we insert your site into the Ring. However, it should at least generate a response from the server that your site isn't in the Ring. If you don't get that, then make sure ***Your ID*** in the code has been replaced by the actual numerical site ID that was assigned your site when you signed up for the Ring.

Can I get help installing the graphic and code on my site?

Yes. First, check out our helpfile for installing the FAR graphic and code. Follow those instructions, and double check your work.
